Dining
Bancogiro (Osteria da Andrea), Campo San Giacometto, San Polo 122 - Venezia
Located next to Rialto bridge, this “hotspot” began a trend when it opened in 2002. In a downstairs bar that looks as if it has been there for centuries, the counter is laden with trays of cicheti, Venetian version of tapas. Upstairs, there’s a nightly battle to secure one of the few tables where mostly fish-based dishes with exotic flourishes are served.
Dogado wine bar and restaurant, Cannaregio 3660/a, Venezia - tel +39-041 5208544
If you’re craving a meeting place with a young crowd and cordial staff, this little jewel is the right place. It just opened on the Strada Nova on the first floor of a store with a huge terrace.
Naranzeria, osteria and wine bar, near Rialto Bridge and Bancogiro, tel +39-041-7241035
director Stefano Monti - owner Brandino Brandolini. Its customers include cicheti-grazers, wine-imbibers (in this case, there’s a fine selection of wines from the nearby Friuli region), and diners who come for the fairly pricey sushi and the innovative takes on local delicacies.
Antiche Carampane, Rio Terà delle Carampane 1911, San Polo, Venezia tel +39-041-5240165
The nearby Rialto Bridge location is home to one of the always recommended, oldest trattorias. The toponym derives from the 16th-century Ca’ Rampani Palace. It is a part of Venice’s dining history…loved by intellectuals, artists and city personalities. It has become famous through the word-of-mouth of intelligent travelers and tourists, however, it is NOT a tourist spot. The menu is high quality and reasonably priced, but you can still find home-made sweets and biscuits. Its traditional cooking and genuine service. The specialty of the restaurant is Casso Pipa (spaghetti with spices and sea food, in an old-style preparation of pasta from Chioggia).
Da Fiore (2202 Calle del Scaleter, +39 041 721308) This is a warm, unpretentious, dining event serving the best seafood, not only in the city, but some say, it’s the best in the world. Enjoyed by all, including their famous patrons, Johnny Depp, Mick Jagger and Tom Cruise, who have dined in the wood-paneled main room or on the small balcony overlooking the canal. Try the seared tuna, fresh from the Adriatic and drizzled with olive oil.
De Pisis restaurant at the Bauer Il Palazzo. This lovely, intimate restaurant rests along the Grand Canal and is run by a well-known international Chef, Giovanni Ciresa. He experiments with Venice’s culinary traditions to create imaginative dishes such as taglioni made with chestnut flour and filled with wild mushrooms, or squid and fresh chilli. Sitting on the best terrace in Venice with the sound of lapping waves and a view of Santa Maria della Salute is an experience you cannot miss.
